DermHairDoc® was created by a Black female board-certified dermatologist with over 20 years of experience treating patients with hair problems. While in private practice in the metropolitan DC area, she treated several different types of alopecia, especially in patients of color. After treating her patients, their hair began to grow, and they had many hair care questions. She would recommend products with essential ingredients to protect this newly-grown hair. With her Clinical Laboratory Science degree from Howard University and her experience as an Associate Scientist at Merck & Co., Inc., the DermHairDoc® investigated the ingredients in the most popularly used haircare products. She honed in on her patients’ experiences and her own personal hair journey to develop a product line that would meet the needs of hair traumatized by daily pollutants, toxins, and plain old grooming.
To her surprise, too many of the hair care lines on the market featured products full of harmful, hormone destabilizing, and even cancer-causing ingredients. These hormone disruptors even produce excess estrogen in the body. As the mom of children with textured hair, she was hurt that these harmful toxins and ingredients (phthalates, parabens, some silicones) were allowed in any hair care products at all. Adding insult to injury, astronomical levels of these harmful ingredients were found specifically in products marketed to Black women. She turned this hurt and helplessness into action.
This discovery shocked her and defined the change in her career.
This is when she and her dream team of hair industry veterans began researching and mixing ingredients that deliver clinically proven results, with a salon-like feel, without compromising the health and safety of the consumer. This is what started DermHairDoc®.
